Shipwreck Park Sinks Again! 10:00am | One Mile East of the Pompano Beach Fishing Pier

Shipwreck Park Inc., whose vision is to create artificial reefs to preserve our natural coral reef system by creating a unique underwater park, is sinking again! Just one year after the successful sinking of the 324 foot vessel Lady Luck, Shipwreck Park, Inc. in conjunction with the City of Pompano Beach is sinking a another ship. Plans are now underway to sink the Okinawa, one mile east of the Pompano Beach Pier on August 19th at 10:00 a.m. When she sinks, the Okinawa will be located between the City’s Pier and the Lady Luck.

The Okinawa is a 107 feet long vessel built in New Orleans, Louisiana, for the U.S. Army in 1953 was retired in 2001. Like the Lady Luck, the Okinawa will have unique interactive public art created and installed by local artist Dennis McDonald. The life sized artwork will be designed to attract marine growth as well as divers from around the world. While the Lady Luck was sunk in 120 feet of water, the Okinawa will be sunk in 70 feet of water making it accessible to almost any dive skill level as it will be just 45-70 feet below the surface.

Shipwreck Park, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the creation of an underwater park system establishing artificial reefs, utilizing public art to raise awareness for the need to preserve and conserve our natural coral reef system. Finlandia Vodka is a major sponsor of the Okinawa whose commitment to clean water and the preservation of our ecology align perfectly with Shipwreck Park’s mission.
