Past and Current Projects (updated April, 2014)

We are always looking to improve our facilities at the Pompano Beach Golf Courses for the enjoyment of our Members and guests. During the months of March and April (2013), we completed a bunker renovation on our Palms Course....shaping all the existing bunkers and replenishing sand (over 1200 tons!!)….the same sand used on the Pines course. In May (2013), we welcomed our new maintenance provider, Cypress Golf Management. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Cypress.

During the months of June and July (2013), we pursued significant improvement projects on the Palms course....tree clearing, golf car path edging, extensive weed eradication (we will grow back the favorable Bermudagrass!!), and hole definition (shaping out fairway and rough areas). You will now see “natural” areas on the golf course....areas that are considered out of play that will be maintained in a natural fashion….much like many of the courses you see during the British Open. This was just the start of a dedicated and focused effort to improve the playing conditions and aesthetics on the Palms course.

During the months of August and September (2013), we focused on our Clubhouse area, upgrading the landscaping, installing a new brick paver walkway to our Starter House, applying an attractive stain to our walkways, and painting the exterior of the Clubhouse and Galuppi’s Restaurant. In November (2013), we took delivery on 140 brand new tanzanite blue Yamaha golf cars, complete with state of the art technology (single point watering system), tops, rain/bag covers, windshields (to combat those cooler, winter mornings!!), and premium tires and steering wheels.

We did not slow down in December (2013)!! We focused on turf improvement, the practice putting greens, and our practice teeing ground. We identified some weaker turf areas (Pines course) typically uncovered in the post grow-in process and made long-term modifications to make sure we will have consistent quality turf for many years to come. We put down 54 pallets of Celebration Bermuda sod to strengthen these weaker areas. Some areas remain weak, but we will continue to focus on these weaker areas, applying the necessary nutrients. We identified a Nematode issue and applied “Curfew” to slow down the invasion of this unwanted and damaging “pest.” We overseeded the practice facility putting green with a cool season turfgrass (Poa Trivialis) as a test to see how this particular grass performs at our facility during the winter months. We also overseeded the practice facility teeing ground with a cool season rye grass to make sure we have a quality hitting area for our members, daily players, and guests. During the summer of 2013, we uncovered some sink holes on Palms course…erosion caused by the collapse of older drainage pipes. In January (2014), we pursued and succesfully completed a drainage project on #8 and #13 on the Palms course to fix these sink holes and replace the older pipe with new drainage pipe.

The first few months of 2014 were a challenge. Unseasonable and inconsistent weather created maintenance problems and we continued to have difficulty growing healthy turfgrass in sandy areas on the new Greg Norman Pines Course. We approached the problem in an aggressive fashion. In March (2014), we identified one of the troubled areas (near #10 teeing ground) and created a test site to apply organic materials to stimulate root growth and turfgrass health. If the project proves successful, we will initate the process to treat roughly 35-40 identifed acres of “troubled” turfgrass.

By the summer of 2014, we will have a Fertigation system in place. Fertigation is a process where we capture the irrigation water before it goes to the golf course so we can inject the needed nutrients/chemicals necessary to make the irrigation process successful. This system will allow us to deliver the needed products to the turfgrass in a consistent fashion, effectively creating a healthier turfgrass.

In March/April (2014), we installed top-of-the-line artificial hitting areas on our Driving Range so we can provide a quality hitting area during times of maintenance and/or inclement weather. The hitting mats will also afford us the opportunity to maintain the turfgrass on the teeing ground in a more consistent fashion.

To better accommodate the occassional repair on a putting surface, we initiated a project (April 2014) to build a TifEagle putting green (nursery). This 1,000 square foot (approximate) putting surface/nursery is projected to be in operation by the end of the summer (2014).

We continue to improve the physical property/facility. In April (2014), we completed a resurfacing project on the bridge that brings players from the 18th hole of each golf course back to the Clubhouse area. The new surface is more durable, provides a smoother ride if in a golf car, and provides for a better, more relaxing walk if the player is on foot.

As we roll well into 2014, we continue to look for improvements/enhancements to the golf facility. We have over $5M in projects identified in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan. These projects range from a new golf car maintenance facility to facility upgrades/renovation to new golf car paths on the Palms Course to a complete upgrade of the turfgrass and putting surfaces on the Palms Course. We hope to pursue these much needed projects in the very near future.

Pro's Corner Golf Tip

One of the quickest ways to lower your scores is to improve your short game. When you are just off the green and have plenty of room to roll the ball to the pin a basic chip shot is required. Select a 7 or 8 iron. This will give you a lower trajectory shot. Your set up or address position is very important for this shot. Place your feet closer together, open your left foot(for right handers) toward the target. Put more weight on your left foot(about 60%) and place your hands left or slightly in front of the ball. The weight left and hands left will promote a downward blow on the ball.

Now make a stroke similar to a putting stroke. Don't get wristy with this shot. While taking your backswing, keep your weight on the left foot and remember to keep your head down until you have made contact.
