Morris Day and The Time & Cameo

May 29th
8:00pm
Pompano Beach Amphitheater, 1806 NE 6th St

What more can we say about the funky, fabulous Morris Day? Morris Day and The Time have made music since the 1970’s, when Day got his musical chops in his first project with band member Prince. He later acted in Prince’s musical drama, Purple Rain.

The Time was formed from a larger band called “Flyte Tyme” and is noted for hip anthems such as “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.” The founding members reunited for a performance with Rihanna at the 50th annual Grammy Awards Show. In February of this year, Jimmy Kimmel Live featured the band as part of the #MashUpMonday series, forming a supergroup with Grammy-nominated trio HAIM. The result? “Morris Day and The HAIM”.

Cameo has been spitting top-notch dance tracks for 40 years of funk! Larry Blackmon, band leader and drummer of Cameo, is an accomplished musician and producer. He has spent his career producing chart-topping artists such as Bobby Brown, Chaka Kahn and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band itself is a pacemaker and its unique style will continue to inspire musicians today and tomorrow.

Start the night off with a funky pre-concert party with Magic 102.7's DJ Holiday! For more info, visit pompanobeacharts.org.

Dates: June 8-26
Ages: 6-14
Time: 9am-3pm
Students will select a concentration called a “focus studio” to study throughout the camp session. Focus studios offered are Theatre, Musical Theatre/Vocalists, and Visual Art/Technical Theatre. Campers will spend three hours per day training in their selected area. They will also explore other performing and visual arts. Each session will culminate in an original show centering around the camp’s instructional theme. Led by the director of education and teaching artists, campers will present a 45-minute performance highlighting what they’ve learned.

Focus Studios:

Theatre: Students will dive into aspects of acting such as focus and energy, confidence and stage presence, group collaboration, utilizing the imagination, basic stage skills, vocal technique and projection, understanding and utilizing physicality, and developing a script.

Musical Theatre/Vocalists: Acting, vocal and dance skills will make our campers a triple threat! Students will refine their skills through classroom exercises and instruction including solo and group work in song, character development, and dance combinations.

Visual Art/Technical Theatre: Campers will engage their imagination and expressive ability through printmaking, collage, painting, and more. They will utilize these techniques to explore costume and behind-the-scenes work such as stage management and design, lighting, and more.

Students are asked to bring a sack lunch and a healthy snack, as meals are NOT provided. Tuition for each camp session is $450. Before care from 8am-9am is $25/week – after care until 6pm is $35/week. Generous scholarships and payment plans are available.

Brazilian Sessions: Cezar Santana Trio

August 7th
8:00pm - 11:00pm
BaCA (Bailey Contemporary Arts), 41 NE 1st Street

Chasing his love for music, Santana dropped out of college in Rio de Janeiro to pursue a career in the industry. His talent, nonetheless, had sprung out much earlier, when at age 7 he asked for his first guitar. "My mother used to sing all the time and that's what inspired me in the first place", explains Cezar, referring to his love for music since early childhood. In 1981 Santana moved to Madrid, where he spent the next five years. It was in Spain that he launched his professional career and also perfected his musical skills. In 1982, he produced Spain's first Brazilian radio show and won his first prize as a professional musician, ranking third at the Madrid Jazz Festival in 1986. A brilliant singer, songwriter and guitarist from Rio de Janeiro, Cezar has since performed in front of audiences in four continents. With his dynamic virtuosity and unique feel for his viewers, he transforms listeners with his clever lyrics and contagious grooves. He translates his music into a medley of English, Portuguese and Spanish lyrics. The compositions harmoniously cover the spectrum that goes from Brazilian beats to Mediterranean melodies.
