Composting

Backyard Composting Program

Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic material into a biological soil amendment (often called humus). Place compost in the garden around your home’s landscaping – the nutrient-rich material is recycled back into the soil and plant life. It’s good for the environment and great for your landscaping!

Free Composting Kit

For a limited time, The City of Pompano Beach Environmental Services Department is offering its residents a free composting kit. It comes complete with The Earth Machine and a collection basket for use in your kitchen. Do your part to keep waste out of the landfills!

Proof of Pompano Beach residency is required. One Earth Machine per single family residence. Multi-family residences require written approval from the condominium association or property management prior to distribution or delivery. See below information about distribution events.

Compost Recipe

4 parts greens to 2 parts browns. Keeping a balance of moist green materials will help the compost break down faster.

The average single family home in Florida generates about 1,700 pounds per year of yard waste, which amounts to over 40% of the total household generation of solid waste. Our garbage hauler collects more than 50,000 tons of yard waste per year, and the amount keeps growing.

Greens (High in Nitrogen) Browns (High in Carbon) Do Not Use
Grass Clippings Leaves Bones
Pruning Clippings Bark Dog / Cat Feces
Fruits and Vegetables Straw Oil
Houseplants Woodchips Grease
Manure (ex: cow, horse, pig, chicken, rabbit) Sawdust Fat
Kitchen Scraps (ex: stale bread, egg shells, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, citrus rinds, fruit and vegetable peels) Newspaper (shredded) Wood Ash
- Brush (chopped) Meat / Fish scraps
- Corn Stalks Dairy Products
- - Weed Seeds
- - Diseased Plants

Here are three great reasons to compost:

  • It is an environmentally sound and cost effective way to reduce solid waste.
  • It extends the life of the existing landfills and delays the need to create new ones.
  • It creates a useful soil amendment that really makes your garden and landscape grow.
