$30M for Road Safety Announced at Grand Opening of Senior Activity Center | City of Pompano Beach and Metropolitan Planning Organization to Host Joint Ceremony

Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick will join officials from the City of Pompano Beach and the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) at the new Pompano Beach Senior Activity Center to celebrate the completion of the $21 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant and announce a series of recently awarded grants that equal $30 million to help create safer roads and better transportation options. The event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new $5.8 million state-of-the-art center which abuts the TIGER project and will feature a presentation of a portion of the grant funding. The public is invited to this gathering which will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday July 17, 2023, at the new Senior Center located at 2005 NW 9 Street.
“We are honored that Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and the MPO will join us to present the Railroad Crossing Elimination Program Grant,” stated Pompano Beach Mayor Rex Hardin. “This grant will fund necessary safety improvements at our railroad crossings and throughout Broward County.”
The Broward MPO recently wrapped up its TIGER grant, which constructed pedestrian and bike-friendly facilities to create vital links throughout the county. The City of Pompano Beach received $3.5 million to help construct improvements on MLK Boulevard from I-95 to Powerline Road. A $5 million Safe Streets for All grant, a collaboration between the MPO and Broward County, is underway to design safer, more walkable communities. The Broward MPO is a recipient of the Thriving Communities Program which will be bring technical assistance training to the cities in Broward. The Broward MPO received a $15.4 million Rail Crossing Elimination Program grant to upgrade 21 Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway grade crossings to the highest level of safety. Through these grants, Broward MPO aims to improve the quality of life for everyone throughout the county.
“From safer streets to state-of-the-art facilities for our senior citizens, this event will be a celebration of our commitment to strengthening our community through innovative programs,” continued Hardin.
This gathering will officially open the doors to the new Senior Activity Center, which is built on 4.5 acres along Martin Luther King Boulevard, east of Powerline Road. A General Obligation Bond-funded project, it features 8,400 Sq. Ft. ‘under air’ that will offer a state-of-the-art fitness center, activity rooms, an outdoor garden and administration office space. The center will be the home for the Senior Citizens Club, a group of over 200 members, all 55 plus, who partake in a variety of on campus activities including bingo, karaoke, bake-offs and more, while also enjoying off campus trips to events and museums.
